In Welcome to the discussion
I read these articles (links below) a few months ago and learned a lot from them. Hope you find them informative &/or helpful as well! I’m interested to hear about your thoughts on this—particularly about Damian Milton’s double empathy problem and Dimitri Bolis’s dialectical misattunement hypothesis. "…we often present with reduced affect display … This can easily be confused with a lack of emotions, which is then often confused with callousness … But I assure you, whereas we may outwardly appear emotionless, internally we tend to have very strong emotions." Quote from Embrace Autism, Autism and Empathy https://embrace-autism.com/the-different-types-of-empathy/ https://embrace-autism.com/autism-and-empathy/

After today’s meeting I decided to look into autism & connections with animals, as well as animal assisted therapies. I linked a couple interesting reads. Still have to finish reading the research paper though since it’s quite long. r/aspergers, r/aspergirls and r/autism on Reddit have lots of discussions about autism and feeling connected to animals (you just need to search for it!) https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/08/the-bond-between-animals-and-the-autistic/623372/ https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323940919_The_Effectiveness_of_Animal_Assisted_Therapy_in_Adults_with_Autism_Spectrum_Disorder_Study_Protocol_for_a_Randomized_Controlled_Trial

In Meetings!
December 3 **Online (Zoom)** December 10 from 15:00-16:00 in room 306 at the UPEI Robertson Library Location: The library floor plans are pictured below. The dark purple line shows the path to room 306 in case you haven't been to the UPEI library before or forget the location :) Parking: I included a campus map with parking lots A, B, and VP (visitor parking) outlined and shaded in dark purple. Accessible parking is available in 'VP' lots. **UPEI parking passes and metered parking are not enforced on weekends.** Note: It's ok if meetings don't end at 16:00 since we have the last time slot for Saturday bookings and the library doesn't close until 17:00. No pressure to stay longer than an hour, but I wanted to mention it anyway!

In Welcome to the discussion
It was great to meet you all @Luisa @Jill and Katherine. I posted this to FB but posting here as well. We talked about Loop earplugs at the meeting and I figured I would post a brief review since a few of you seemed interested in them. (The grey lump in the pictures is just a macrame thing I made since the case is small and easy to lose) The earplugs that I have aren’t noise cancelling; they dampen sounds and make background noise easier to ignore. Unexpected/high pitched sounds don’t put me on edge as much as they normally do. Reducing sensory input generally makes life a bit less mentally draining. The difference isn’t remarkable, but I find that small improvements are better than none. Some things to consider: You might hear your heartbeat/other internal processes if you wear earplugs in an area that is already quiet(ish). They fit just like earbuds. I would look for something else if you don’t like the feeling of typical ‘jelly’ earbuds.

In Meetings!
True Taylor posted a comment here and on the Facebook group and brought up the idea of having weekly hour-long meetings, which sounds like a great idea. Some people may attend every week, and some may not, and that’s perfectly fine. True’s idea could give more members a chance to attend (i.e., missing a meeting doesn’t mean waiting a month for the next one). There is also the question about date, time and location. The first meeting was on Saturday from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm in the Blue Jay Room in the Dominion building (97 Queen St.) - the new location of the Charlottetown library/learning centre. I rather liked this meeting spot/time, but I am more interested to hear what everyone else thinks. Please share your thoughts on this (see poll below)! It would be great to have a set schedule so that everyone can be on the same page :)
