Housing toolkit & lending library

I received this email for our site. I'm going to post the information to the resources page - as soon as I create the resources page :) but I thought I'd also post it here for now.

The library is pretty cool - anyone can join and borrow books for free. I've never used any of the housing resources but if anyone else has, please comment and tell us your experience. Here's the email:

"I’m writing today as a representative from AIDE Canada, as I feel I have a resource that could be used within your community. As a collective, we are curating some of our content and sending it out to groups that we feel could benefit from it.

Linked is a housing Toolkit that will provide individuals and their families information about housing options in their province and what supports are available to them. The goal of the Housing Toolkit is to help explain the services and supports available in PEI for individuals with autism and their support network. Below is a link to the toolkit we have created for your perusal. Please pass it around to those you feel may benefit from it. We also have many other toolkits, webinars, articles, and infographics regarding housing and many other topics you may find helpful on our website.

Other helpful resources included on the website are:

  • a free, nation-wide lending library

  • a database of articles and research summaries focused on autism and/or intellectual disability

  • a national map of autism and/or intellectual disability programs and services

  • a calendar of events, including on-demand streaming of past recorded webinars,

and several other features that we hope will be very valuable to our community. The direction and applications of the site were developed after many months of community consultations, quantitative surveys and focus groups with autistic self-advocates, parents, family members, service providers and educators.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions, or feedback you may have!

Best Regards

I wanted to mention I used the lending library to order a book - 'Older Adults and Autism Spectrum Conditions, an introduction and guide' by Wenn Lawson. It worked very well. The book arrived postage paid and includes free postage for me to return it. The book is interesting but also quite depressing as it describes the need for support increasing as the autistic person ages but at the same time that support decreasing as the medical profession is focused on children. I must say it's been awhile since I've read an actual book and not an ebook.

I also requested the AIDE library purchase a new book "Older Autistic Adults In Their Own Words: The Lost Generation" that was recently mentioned on Autism Canada ASD Central on facebook and they have advised they've ordered it. Its an ebook so I don't have to worry about spilling something on it. 😊
