Autism + ADHD = auDHD
I've been reading a lot about auDHD lately and I've found it very informative and even validating for me in some ways. It’s always good to have an explanation for things and it’s nice to know I’m not weird.
Autism and ADHD are different conditions. Both are recognized disabilities with their own unique strengths and challenges. Neither is better or worse than the other. According to the articles I'm reading, auDHD means someone with the required characteristics for both conditions, usually diagnosed separately. The presence of both conditions results in unique strengths and challenges; not the same as an autistic person and not the same as an ADHD person but similar to other auDHD people. Does that make sense? Hopefully I got that right.
I read recently that “It is difficult to accurately understand another’s inner experience especially between 2 different neurotypes” and I think that’s true. It's probably challenging for neurodivergent people to accommodate other neurodivergent people who have different conditions than they do due to their own condition(s). But I don’t know if that’s because it’s actually difficult or if the difficulty lies in our expectations and assumptions. I cannot, as an autistic person expect an auDHD person to think or act the same way I do even though they’re also autistic.
It seems to me we should explore our similarities and differences and try to find ways to support each other. I hope you all are with me on that.
As far as I know I'm autistic and not ADHD, so I don't want to presume to speak for a condition I don't have. I'm hoping the auDHD members of this group will comment and post so we can all learn from each other and find those ways for people with different neurodivergent conditions to support each other. I think if we're going to ask neurotypicals to accept, support, and accommodate us, we should model that behaviour for them. And to do that we’re going to have to learn from each other. What do you think of that idea?
I going to post some articles about auDHD that I hope will be informative and get the conversation started.
