In Welcome to the discussion
Hello, I’m fairly new to the island and I’m struggling to get the (preferably sensitive/compassionate) health care I need. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better way? mainly I am finding it difficult due to sensory overload, the fluorescent lights, the number of people I need to get through to get to the one I actually need to talk to, and “shutting down” when people ask me what I’m doing there, (what is anyone doing anywhere?), etc. it was a lot less horrible when I had a primary care provider before I moved here. she knew me and knew I was autistic, which I think was probably a bit helpful for everyone. But now I struggle with the huge task of coming out as autistic every time, and it’s just a lot of spoons to lose at the beginning and there’s a short time usually, people tend to be rushing, and it’s not going to be a multiple appointment situation obviously (it’s always going to be a different person). any thoughts on how to quickly come out as autistic and explain what that means for care so we can all on the same page? relying on my partner who I am lucky enough to have accompanying me is just not really the same as being able to talk myself and ask for what I need myself. it’s one thing to understand what I need but to know how to explain that to another person with their own ideas for how things should go and what autism is is a whole other thing. Any suggestions about how to navigate the health care system better would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. hope i‘m using this correctly! Thanks for creating this group.
